Rubinrot by Kerstin Gier, 2009

The time is out of joint; O curs'd spite,That ever I was born to set it right!
Hamlet

A time travel story in London, involving the wrong teenager...

I would like to thanks @une.avalanche.de.livres for recommending me this book. This unsual story tackles my favorite topic (time manipulation). However, I believe it's easier to compare it to novels like « Harry Potter » or « Percy Jackson ». Now, three notes :

  1. It's like Harry Potter through the looking glass! Harry Potter is poor boy, living with people who despise him, whereas Gwendolyn Shepherd is a girl living within a big and rich family. Likewise, Harry has to look outside his home, meeting some very different people like Hermione, Ron, or even Dumbledore (my favorite character by the way:) ). On the other hand, Gwendolyn has to delve into her family, meeting her ancestors in the past. I even believe Rubinrot is a kind of critic of Harry Potter...

  2. If you read the book in English, you won't notice it's by a German author : she has done English studies and so depicts quite well London and British people. Nonetheless, there remain some hints : 1- the time travel organisation includes too many German people  2- One character is « der Graf von Saint Germain », Germain = German = Deutsch = irony?

  1. Quite easy to read, even in German. Is the film easy to understand ? I'll see soon...

See you next time!
